Seven Guidelines for Better Lung Health

Take a deep breath.
IN and OUT.
IN and OUT.
That simplest of actions is the essence of your life.

We are completely dependent on our body's ability to draw in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.  Each breath draws in essential oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere and pulls it deep into our lung tissue.  Large passageways branch into increasingly smaller and more intricate structures.

The average human has about 700 million little sacs that do miraculous work which is where the gas exchange takes place.  You don't think about that when you are breathing.

We don't need to think about that because it's automatic in our bodies - it just happens without any conscious thought.

So healthy lungs are important and to be functioning in peak condition.   Healthy lungs lead to a long and healthy life.

Here are the tips and tricks for keeping your lungs safe.

1. Get Active - when you are resting your lungs only function at 50% of their capacity.  Aerobic exercise like running, cycling, swimming or interval training pushes our lungs to peak capacity and strengthens our diaphragm.

Doctors also state the more intense activity helps counteract the buildup of pollutants, allergens and dust in lungs.

So exercise several times a week is important.

2.  Breathe Deeply

Focussed and deliberate breathing while at rest also benefits the lungs by expanding them to near full capacity.

Mindful breathing starts with slowly inhaling through the nose, lifting your chest, opening your ribcage.  Then exhale completely through the mouth, relaxing the chest and pushing out as much air as possible.

Good posture and reducing the total time sitting also assists our breathing.

3.  Don't smoke - nothing needs to be added. If you smoke stop!

4.  Avoid Pollution

The tiny tissues deep in the lungs are very delicate and vulnerable to damage if exposed to pollution and chemicals over an extended period of time.  Avoid second-hand smoke, outdoor air pollution and harmful chemicals at both work and home.

5.  Eliminate cleaners with dangerous chemicals from your home

The 20-year independent study found cleaning with toxic chemicals as little as once a week can be as damaging to the lungs as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years.

6.  Monitor Radon

Radon is a gas naturally found in some rock and soil.  If a home is built on top of an area with Radon, it can leak into a home through basement floors or foundations.  Trapped inside it can build up to unhealthy levels.  It can't be seen or smelled and becomes radioactive as it decays - exposure can lead to lung cancer.  There are kids to test for Radon.

7.  Prevent Infection

According to the American Lung Association, colds and other respiratory infections can sometimes become serious.

Common sense but sharing anyway:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water.
- Use a hand sanitiser when you don't have access to running water
- Minimise interactions with large groups during cold and flu season
- Keep up on your dental hygiene, including brushing, flossing and rinsing.
 - See a health care professional regularly
-  Give your immune system a fighting chance by providing your body with the essential nutrition it needs for complete health.

Replace your Hand Soap with Thieves Hand Soap

Everyone washes their hands, so why not save your skin from harmful toxic ingredients lurking in hand soaps and place the Foaming Thieves Hand Soaps by all your sinks. Thieves Foaming Hand Soap lets you pump, rinse, and get on your way without harsh, drying detergents. With a plant-based, instant-foam formula, skin is left feeling clean and refreshed but never over-dried.

7 Ingredients you want to avoid in hand soap include:

• Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES)

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant, detergent, and emulsifier used in thousands of cosmetic products, as well as in industrial cleaners. Present in nearly all shampoos, toothpastes, body washes, and cleansers, liquid hand soaps, laundry detergents, and bath oils and bath salts.
Although SLS originates from coconuts, the manufacturing process results in SLES/SLS being contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogenic byproduct.
SLS is the sodium salt of lauryl sulfate, and is rated by the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Skin Deep Cosmetics Database as a "moderate hazard."
SLS breaks down the skin's moisture barrier, easily penetrates the skin, and allows other chemicals to penetrate by increasing skin permeability by approximately 100-fold.
Combined with other chemicals, SLS becomes a "nitrosamine," a potent class of carcinogen.
Research studies have linked SLS to skin and eye irritation, organ toxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity and endocrine disruption.

• Dioxane
Common in a wide range of products as part of PEG, Polysorbates, Laureth, and ethoxylated alcohols. These compounds are usually contaminated with high concentrations of highly volatile 1,4-dioxane which is easily absorbed through the skin.
This "probable carcinogen to humans" substance has received a "high hazard" rating from EWG's Skin Deep and is especially toxic to your brain, central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.
A synthetic derivative of coconut, watch for misleading language on labels, stating "comes from coconut."
Avoid any product with indications of ethoxylation, which include: "myreth," "oleth," "laureth," "ceteareth," any other "eth," "PEG," "polyethylene," "polyethylene glycol," "polyoxyethylene," or "oxynol," in ingredient names.

• Parabens
Widely used as preservatives in an estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products.
Parabens have hormone-disrupting qualities, mimicking estrogen, and interfere with the body's endocrine system. Studies have shown that parabens can affect your body much like estrogens, which can lead to diminished muscle mass, extra fat storage, and male breast growth.
The EPA has linked methyl parabens in particular to metabolic, developmental, hormonal, and neurological disorders.

• Propylene glycol
A common ingredient in personal care products, it's been shown to cause dermatitis, kidney or liver abnormalities, and may inhibit skin cell growth or cause skin irritation.
Also found in engine coolants, antifreeze, rubber cleaners, adhesives, and paints and varnishes.

• Diethanolamine or DEA
DEA readily reacts with nitrite preservatives and contaminants to create nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), a known and potent carcinogen.
DEA also appears to block absorption of the nutrient choline, vital to brain development.

• Fragrance
Toluene, made from petroleum or coal tar, is found in most synthetic fragrances. Chronic exposure is linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and may affect a developing fetus.
Synthetic fragrances can also be drying and irritating to your skin.

• Triclosan
The antibacterial agent added to many liquid hand soaps to help kill germs. Triclosan is suspected of contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.
I challenge you to go look at the store bought and scented hand soaps you have in your home right now and see if you can identify any of those ingredients listed above. What did you discover?

THIEVES Lollipops or Lozenges

Most kids just LOVE lollipops. They would eat them constantly if we let them.

Because of Ashley's children loving lollipops so much she decided to investigate what exactly is in them.
She writes in that amazing community I blog about - The Mix.
"I investigated, I looked it up, or trust me when I say, it’s nothing good. Maybe they shouldn’t be edible, after all. It was time to replace them with something better. I found this recipe on a blog and decided to add a drop of Thieves to the batch. Then, I got really brave and added orange, too. What can I say? I walk on the wild side."

Gather these items first:
1/2 to 1 Cup Honey - Really, any amount will do.
I just eyeballed about a cup and got about 20 lollipops.
3-5 drops Thieves vitality oil
3 drops Orange vitality oil
Lollipop Sticks - You can snag these at JoAnn’s, Michael's or another craft store. Or Aliexpress and get shopping points and cashback.
Silpat Mat or Parchment Paper
A Candy Thermometer - This is helpful, but not necessary.

Here’s how to make these yummy treats:

Pour honey in a small sauce pan and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
If you have a candy thermometer, use it to tell you when the honey reaches about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
It'll take about 10 minutes.
If you don't have a candy thermometer, you can test the honey by dropping a bit of it into a cup of ice water.
If it hardens (like candy) it's ready.
If not, keep on boiling.
*Keep a super close eye on your honey.
It will seem like nothing's happening for a while, then it will increase in temperature very quickly.
It's better to test often and too soon, than to miss the mark and burn a batch.
When the honey reaches 300 degrees, remove it from the burner.
Add Vitality oils and stir.
Pour small circles on the silpat mat or a piece of parchment paper.
After pouring five or so circles, stop and put the lollipop sticks in each circle of honey.
Give the sticks a little twist to be sure they're really stuck in there.
Continue creating small honey circles on the mat, stopping every few minutes to put in the sticks.
*When you first pour the honey, it's very thin and difficult to get a good circle, but as you continue on, the honey thickens and is much easier to pour.
Feel free to go back over your first few to help round them out and make them a bit thicker.
Allow them to cool and harden on the counter completely at room temperature, about a half hour.
To store, wrap them with a bit of plastic wrap and secure them with string or a twist tie.
If that's too much work for you, just cut up some parchment paper and fold it over the sucker heads.
It'll keep them from sticking together when you store them, but will peel off easily when you're ready to enjoy them.
This process sounds long, but it’s really super quick.
Note:  You could make lozengers/drops.

As always I have all the links at the bottom of this blog to make it easy for you.

Laundry Detergent Is Deadly

Yes, your laundry detergent is deadly!

I just read this morning something that made me go searching for this Switch and Ditch recipe.

This is what I read:

Laundry Detergent Is Deadly.

According to the University of Washington, laundry detergent releases banned cancer-causing chemicals that may be affecting the health of you and your family.

On July 23rd, 2008, a study was performed. What they found is that 99% of laundry detergents release cancer-causing chemicals that are legally hazardous and toxic by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

Most Of Them Were NOT On The Label.

*********************************************

I watched half of the movie doco STINK on Netflix - I was appalled and I know you will be shocked! I must get back and watch more.

So make it easy switch and ditch and save yourself heaps of money and more importantly you and your families health and wellbeing.

You can do a DIY recipe which I can share but this is such an easy option.  Put one capful in your wash.  A little goes a long way.

With a plant-based formula, Thieves Laundry Soap gently and naturally washes your clothes, cleaning them without any chemical or synthetic residue. Natural enzymes and powerful essential oils add to the formula’s strength to leave your clothes fresh and clean with a light citrus scent.

The only challenge as I write this it is out of stock!  Why because everyone is switching to healthy alternatives.
