It is that time of the year and the family is coming to visit. You want everything to be sparkly and look bright and new!
If you are like me you will have dumped the Pledge - that is one of our well-known brands of toxic furniture cleaner. I did have a moral dilemma in how to dump it and I will tell you more another day.
Yes, it makes your wooden furniture look sparkly and new, and keeping in mind that it can light up the whole room, are the dangers of furniture finish extremely justified or was I premature in throwing it away.
My research tells me my Pledge and other traditional furniture cleaning products are profoundly poisonous. I know you and your family do not intentionally, or unintentionally, gulp furniture polish. Just as well as it can have dire consequences and warrants a quick excursion to the emergency department for attention.
To add to your challenges long-term use suggests that it is accumulative on your wellbeing and not in a positive way.
I found this: According to MedlinePlus a service of the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, the hydrocarbons found in liquid furniture polish may lead to poisoning when swallowed, inhaled, or sprayed into the eyes.
MedlinePlus states that if furniture polish is swallowed, symptoms may include confusion, dizziness, severe stomach or throat pain, throat swelling, bloody vomit or stools, breathing difficulty, or even coma. Depending on the extent of the damage, it may continue for several weeks after swallowing the hydrocarbons.
And it continues with: If furniture polish happens to get into your eyes, it can cause skin irritation or vision loss. If it is inhaled, it may cause severe damage to your lungs. If any such contact with furniture polish occurs, 911 should be contacted immediately.
So if it can be that damaging and did you see the bit where it says might cause damage to your lungs - unless you have used everytime you have used your furniture polish a mask you are sure to have unwitting inhaled toxic furniture polish.
So if there are little kids around especially, but I would say categorically that this toxic substance is simply not worth having in the house.
Furniture polish tends to have a hydrocarbon contained in the blend which is formaldehyde, which is a known cancer-causing agent that can gather in human fat tissue after some time. Formaldehyde can likewise eliminate microscopic organisms and growth, which means it could upset sensitive biological systems whenever discarded inappropriately - so that means it can bring havoc to the earth.
So let us say goodbye to the toxic furniture polish and hello to a healthy alternative.
1 capful thieves cleaner
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup vinegar
10 drops orange oil
16 oz glass bottle
Distilled water to top off
Put everything in your glass bottle and you are ready to go and polish the furniture.
Your furniture will be perfect, sparkling, and not discharging unsafe synthetics into your home! Yes let's ditch toxic wood polish and make some easy
